Ham, Petersham and Richmond Riverside News from Green Cllr Andrée Frieze: Summer 2025

Stop the thames sewage pump

Huge thanks to all of you who came to the Show of Hands event on 28 June at Burnell Avenue Green Space to demonstrate the depth of community resistance to the ‘Thames Sewage Pump’.

Now, it’s your chance to tell Thames Water not to dump ‘treated’ sewage into our stretch of the Thames. The statutory consultation for the Teddington Direct River Abstraction (TDRA) scheme started on 17 June. It runs for ten weeks, so make
sure you respond by 26 August. Find guidance here: https://saveourlandsandriver.org.uk/how-to-respondto-the-consultation

Andrée says: “I have been working with the Save Our Lands And River (SOLAR) committee to fight Thames Water’s outrageous plans every step of the way.

“Yet it requires:

  • pumping millions of litres of treated sewage into the Thames
  • digging a 3.5 metre tunnel, 4 km under homes from Hounslow under Ham to Kingston to transfer treated sewage
  • constructing new shafts and infrastructure at Ham Street car park and in Burnell Avenue Green Space, plus others in Kingston.”

“This is an over-engineered, hugely expensive project that will not even meet a fraction of our water needs, putting pollutants into the river affecting wildlife and human use.
Make sure you respond to the consultation – and say NO!”

Making homes cheaper to heat

Councillor Chas Warlow, along with the other Opposition councillors, has successfully pushed the Council to help residents make their homes more energy-efficient. The Council has committed to giving residents information and free planning advice on how to save energy in homes and switch to solar power or heat pumps; the Council also promised to promote training and apprenticeships for young people.

Solar panels on roofs can save residents a lot of money and also cut households’ environmental impact. In June, Chas helped non-profit community group CREW Energy organise an event at Ham Library where residents learned more about how to make their homes more energy-efficient.

Residents also discussed how we as a community can help each other get more solar power on roofs in Ham!

Greens Race to Save Trees

Land alongside Riverside Drive opposite Ham Lands was recently sold at auction to an unknown buyer and, when tree surgeons started chainsawing a couple of them, Andrée and Chas pushed Council staff to urgently issue Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs).

With the support of other ward councillors, staff moved very quickly and the TPOs were issued that same day.

Andrée says: “Working collaboratively we were able to protect these trees from further damage.
